Chicken nuggets are a finger food staple, but when most people think of making them at home, they start with frozen nuggets from the store. I’m here to tell you, “You can make delicious nuggets at home with no frying and minimal cleanup!”

Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets are my favorite way to make a light lunch, simple dinner, or after school snack for my kids (or myself, who am I kidding?!). They’re crisp, flavorful, and far better than any store-bought variety. Cleaning is very easy!

Why Make Chicken Nuggets in the Air Fryer?

I love cooking chicken nuggets in the air fryer because it doesn’t require oil, which is a bonus for many reasons.

It makes a healthy breakfast and I still get a crispy coated chicken nugget. Cleaning is very fast! I don’t have to worry about hot oil, cleaning a deep fryer, or oil spills! Air fryers are very easy to use and easy to clean! Also, I have young children. It’s nice not having to worry about a vat of hot oil if I have to turn my back even for a second.

If you haven’t bought an air fryer yet, because you’re not sure which one to buy, we reviewed a bunch of them and found some favorites. Check out our list of the 7 best air fryers in 2021.

Timing for Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets

If you are using an air fryer for the chicken nuggets you will need to work in batches. The nuggets need to be air fried in a single layer with a little space between each nugget so that the hot air can fully circulate around them.

The good news is that you can have one batch of nuggets going in the air fryer while you work on making another batch of bread! Once you get the system down, it goes really fast! If this is your first time taking your air fryer out, here’s a first timer’s guide to all things air fryer.

To make sure the chicken is fully cooked and has a crispy crust, I like to air fry my chicken nuggets at 350˚F for 6 minutes, then flip them over for another 6 minutes. fry

You should still check the nuggets to make sure they are cooked, but this should be longer than the cooking time. You can check it by cutting it in half thickly and checking for doneness with a digital thermometer or checking to make sure the thickest nugget registers at 165˚F.

I finally bought an air fryer and I’m glad I did—here’s why.

How to Make Chicken Nuggets from Scratch

The problem with making chicken nuggets from scratch is that the small chicken cutlets can easily dry out while cooking. To fix this, I like to brine my chicken in the pickle juice for about 30 minutes before roasting. The brine will help the chicken retain moisture and give it a nice salty color.

Dry the salty nuggets with a paper towel before breading them to give you that crunchy coating.

Next, for the bread, I like to keep it standard. The flour plus some spices in the first bowl, the eggs in the second bowl, and then the breadcrumbs in the third. For the breadcrumbs you can use plain, Italian or even panko breadcrumbs. Dip your nuggets in the flour, then the eggs and then coat them well in the breadcrumbs.

Before air-frying them, lightly spray the nuggets with non-stick cooking spray. This will give them a bit of fat which will make for a super crispy crust.

What to Serve with Air Fryer Chicken Nuggets

A classic side of chicken nuggets is french fries, but I also love serving them with some steamed broccoli or a crunchy salad! You can also try oven-baked sweet potato fries, German potato salad, or green beans with bacon to change up your standard french fry side.

How to make them interesting for adults

My kids always love to dip their chicken nuggets in honey, but I like to make mine a tangy honey mustard sauce that kicks up the flavors a bit and makes them more interesting. You can also serve them with spicy ranch (stir 1/4 cup ranch with 1 tablespoon hot sauce) for a kick-up dip!

Oven Baked Chicken Nuggets

If you don’t have an air fryer, you can make these chicken nuggets on a baking sheet sprayed with non-stick cooking spray.

Bake the chicken nuggets at 400˚F until golden brown, crispy and the chicken reaches an internal temperature of at least 165˚F in the thickest part of the nugget, 20-25 minutes. Be sure to flip the nuggets once halfway through the cooking time. They won’t be as crispy as the air fryer version.

You can also fry the nuggets in a traditional deep fryer. Here’s a list of the 7 best deep fryers you can buy so you don’t have to go out of your way.
